Some time ago, Russia celebrated 40 year since the start of the Baykal-Amurskaya mainline (BAM) construction. And till nowadays BAM causes mixed feeling: some say that it’s a way to the future, other say that it’s a way to the nowhere. CPMI experts tell their opinion about the start of the second life of soviet projects and how they can help us to develop our country.

About all-union constructions CPMI experts started speaking about it with not by accident. Today CPMI started the program “Unique domestic projects”, where we will gather information about large-scale soviet projects, about outstanding domestic experts and managers and where we will analyze soviet methodologies.

“When we are actively working on large investment projects, we are to know and study the history of domestic project management. And we are not only to mention the properties and specificity of realization, but we need to learn questions and risks, which our predecessors faced. They have built all from nothing and now we can use it till nowadays” – said Natalia Persod, the Chairperson of the project management Expert Council.

Experts notice that project management is especially actual today. According to open sources, the Government of Russia approved 34 government investment programs, which most of them will be realized to the end of 2020 year, and the total amount of funding for these programs is estimated at $ 80 trillion rubles. According to experts opinion, these facts make us think about the beginning of the second wave of realization domestic projects.

Government investment projects are not only the continuation of traditions – without “Urengoy-Pomary-Uzgorod” pipeline there won’t be South and North streams and without Baykonur there won’t be “Vostochny” cosmodrome. The experience of global construction is growing and improving according to technical requirements of modern time.

“Let’s take, for example, BAM-2. Today this pipeline is needed not only for Russia, but for Europe too, and for Asia.” – said Said Abdrahmanov, the Chairman of the construction pricing Expert Council, who took part in construction one of the part of BAM (80 kilometers of “Chara-Chiina” pipeline). BAM was constructed for the development of a truly huge territories. Where the pipeline is crossing, they explored and mastered the richest mineral deposits and their logistics demands of a modern transport infrastructure. According to a new BAM project the rail and auto ways will go to Yakutsk, then will pass the Lena-river to Magadan and Anadirya, and after that will go under Bering Strait through Alaska to USA and Canada. Modernized double track BAM, which works on the full power, can give a huge economical effect, because the sea freight from Japan to Europe take 30 days, and railway freight – from 10 to 15 days.

We are not just spectators, but we are taking part in the second life of soviet constructions – said Eldar Dzhuraev, the Chairman of the CPMI.

As a part of the launch of the "Unique domestic projects", Information and Analysis Center of CPMI prepared a review about famous domestic projects and like “Urengoy-Pomary-Uzgorod” and “South stream”, Baykonur and “Vostochny”, BAM and BAM-2. The institute will publish the unique interview with heads and members of soviet global projects. All materials of program “Unique domestic projects” will fill up CPMI Expert Library.
